Jennifer Hoppel, President

Burdge Architects was founded in 1987 by Douglas W. Burdge, AIA, who is widely regarded as the signature architect of Malibu, California. Jennifer Hoppel leads an award-winning architectural, planning and consulting team that specializes in the design of distinguished residential estates and commercial properties around the world. Burdge Architects’ work has been featured in Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Sunset, and Dwell, among others, and has earned widespread industry recognition. The firm has designed over 300 custom homes in Malibu alone, and draws upon a deep proficiency with a wide range of architectural styles. The team’s eco-friendly ethos maximizes use of sustainable materials whenever possible and invokes elements from the surrounding landscape, to create a feeling of immersion in nature. Hoppel says: “We draw inspiration from everything around us…the nature, the waves, the ocean, the mountains. We look at what’s already so naturally beautiful and blend indoor spaces with the amazing outdoor scenery…that California has to offer.”

Luxury Cape Cod

Hoppel and the Burdge team created a stunning, two-story Cape Cod-style home and separate guest house on a private bluff in Malibu that boasted panoramic ocean views. The residence makes the most of its breathtaking location with custom French doors throughout that let in sea breezes and dazzling scenery. Its design incorporates an owner’s suite distinguished by a fireplace and wraparound oceanfront deck. To make the most of its seaside setting, Hoppel and the team designed an open-air pavilion with a fireplace, outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, grill and two stone-crafted bars that flow to the pool, spa, sunken lounge area and firepit. The covered pavilion has a trellised ceiling treatment that mirrors the horizon. Hoppel and the team chose WD-Series heaters for the space because they could be flush mounted into the trellis, maintaining the design’s clean lines while generating significant heat output for multiple gathering areas.

With each project, Hoppel and the Burdge team strive to seamlessly integrate interior and exterior spaces in order to make the estates they design feel like special luxury retreats. Their work in Malibu reflects the area’s laid-back vibe and close engagement with the natural world.
