RJ Smith Construction builds high-end homes in the coastal Southern California communities of Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. Founder RJ Smith was interested in design-build from a young age. After earning his degree at University of California, Santa Barbara, Smith worked with Gunderlock Construction before launching his firm. RJ Smith Construction builds homes for professional athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs and has been featured in Architectural Digest, MarthaStewart.com, California Homes and DIGS Magazine.

Before construction This Hermosa Beach property started off as a full-gut remodel of a 7,000 square foot house before the focus shifted to an all-new construction that could meet all the needs on the homeowners’ wishlist. The home was designed to have a Southern California coastal vibe that fits naturally into the landscape and neighborhood. Project goals Indoor/outdoor living is an essential part of any Southern California coastal design. Both areas of the home were designed to have a seamless flow, with the outdoor spaces built to work naturally with the interior spaces. As a result, the stonework inside the house extends to the outside, the same flooring used indoors is used outdoors, and so on.

We chose Infratech for the design of this home because of the minimal constraints we had. We really get to design around the units. They’re really safe and aesthetically pleasing
the competitors don’t really have anything close to that.

Project Inspirations
Designed to recreate the appearance of traditional Spanish hillside abodes, the Baker Residence features appendages beyond the core of the home that call to mind scattered village buildings. While the interior is clean and modern, the exterior was purposefully designed to create a sense of timelessness, with Santa Barbara field stone and stucco outside and dispersed roof shapes. The idea was to celebrate possible imperfections that would make the property seem like it had acquired its historical character over time.

Outdoor Design Approach
Indoor and outdoor elements merge into one cohesive whole. The outdoor spaces were designed for use in all seasons — even California winters can get chilly! RJ Smith Construction designed the pool area with the organic warmth of a fireplace and the outdoor dining and lounge areas with easy-to-use, smart tech-friendly Infratech heaters that make dining and entertaining outdoors a possibility year-round.

About The Design
The living experience of the Power Street Residence easily transitions from indoor to outdoor. With natural light, open spaces, and abundant plantlife, the home celebrates its coastal environment.

Integrating Infratech
Infratech WD-Series heaters were flush mounted for seamless integration into the stunning white oak ceiling. The stainless steel of the heaters combines with the oak to give a clean, modern feel. The homeowners appreciate the ease of use of the heaters, which can be controlled via smart phone through Infratech’s home management panel.

WD-Series Infratech heaters were flush mounted into the white oak ceiling for a clean, aesthetically-pleasing, contemporary look.

Infratech heaters aid in creating a seamless transition between the home’s indoor and outdoor rooms — a goal for the project.

The versatility, subtlety, and safety of Infratech WD-Series heaters opened up the design possibilities for RJ Smith Construction.

Spaces for outdoor dining and entertaining were high on the homeowners’ wishlist and with Infratech heaters, they can enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round.

“One of the things about Infratech that I love is the seamless integration with the home management panel for a smart home. Clients who are building these properties want it seamless and one-touch with anything they do so having that proprietary use is phenomenal.” — RJ Smith
