Outdoor Design Spotlight: Johnston’s Saltbox

Johnston’s Saltbox is a name synonymous with quality and variety, highlighting the Bay Area’s best local artisan products in a family-owned, local neighborhood-style restaurant. Their warm, inviting atmosphere has recently extended to an outdoor dining room in the form of a winter wonderland-esque greenhouse garden tent charmingly called the “Saltbox Bubble Lounge.” You can place your order at the outdoor patio window and sit down at one of their socially-distanced tables to enjoy a cozy mug of locally mulled wine in the beautiful San Carlos, California weather. The tent has recently been retrofitted with several ceiling-mounted CD-Series Infratech heating elements that offer guests the opportunity to dine outside in a vibrant, welcoming and comfortable space — an essential amenity, given today’s emphasis on promoting public health.

We recently spoke with Sean Haney from The Midglen Studio Architects who worked with the restaurant owners to design a more comfortable outdoor dining experience for the eatery. “Our company, The Midglen Studio, in conjunction with owners Sean and Jennifer Johnston, laid out and designed the project to best utilize the space to allow for social distancing. The goal was to create a sort of ‘winter wonderland,’” says Haney. “Comfort of the patrons was a paramount concern, therefore heating was going to be necessary. Heating outdoor dining areas under a tent was only permitted without open flame devices, therefore the use of Infratech dual filament radiant heaters was the best choice. Our client is beyond happy to have these heaters installed. We appreciate everything that you did to make our client’s vision come true and for helping keep their doors open.

You could say that Infratech heaters are now an integral ingredient in the business’ success. They enable this and many other restaurants to seat more tables per night, book reservations with confidence regardless of weather, and encourage guests to spend more time at the establishment, where they might order additional drinks or dessert. They also provide enhanced efficiency and reduced labor costs. Unlike traditional propane heaters, there are no insurance liabilities or heavy fixtures for staff to haul or refill, and an integrated timer ensures that no one has to remember to shut off the heaters at closing time. It’s a simple win-win.
